A new decade and new promises to be made to ourselves and others!

January is part of a really exciting quarter for the Leisure industry, for one: More than 12% of the total membership of gyms join during the January rush.

For a medium/large size gym, that’s a few hundred new joiners in a short time. But for all initial enthusiasm, nearly 50% leave within the next few months.

In the US alone, the fitness industry is a $30bn market, and is ripe for eCommerce to streamline it further.

Biggest spenders on personal health? Millennials with a lifetime spend of over $112,000 on everything from gym membership, to clothing and supplements, according to MyProtein.

Out of these new joiners and ‘regulars,’ 40% of them will attend classes weekly.

So with such a high drop-off rate, what are some of the lessons to take away from this? Be readily available online and easily accessible for people to book and pay!

It’s easy to see that millennials are the most active generation online and on social media. And because they’re more likely to go to the gym with a training partner (44% of those assessed) or go to a class (40%), then having a strong presence on social media is vital for remaining part of the conversation and boosting retention.

What’s also important is having an online booking system for classes. Especially when a large number of gyms still rely on some manual booking system.

Being equipped with a way to take these bookings and take payments regularly easily can spell the difference between a user that deals with all the headache of booking classes before losing motivation, and providing a seamless way to take bookings and payments.

Fitness businesses that embrace eCommerce like GymBag, Bulk Powders and GymShark are among some of the fastest-growing businesses out there. And digital payments are a big part of that!

Same rules apply for brands involved in fitness fashion. GymShark’s a good example; which gained a reputation as one of Britain’s fastest-growing companies thanks to its online reach with marketing through user-generated content and social media.

When bearing in mind that users are far more likely to join an exercise class with a partner, then promoting online bootcamps are among the most popular choices for resolutionists.

The simple answer for businesses in the world of leisure is to be readily available online for these ambitious resolutionists to set their plans in motion.

Same rules apply for any business that’s involved in the leisure industry. With millennials spending more than any other generation on fitness, being able to provide a streamlined service online is going to ensure that these users get fitter, your business does too.

At Unlimint, we believe that offering users and businesses a genuinely open door when it comes to payment methods provide the best of both worlds for both sides.

Giving customers the flexibility and comfort of use they’re hungry for while showing businesses the way to a truly international market this New Year!
